One of the most difficult things we walk through in life are seasons of transition and change.
And if you’re navigating recovery, it’s even harder. When things shift unexpectedly, when life feels uncertain, those are the moments we’re most tempted to slip back into old patterns. Not because we want to. But because the old way feels familiar. And familiar feels safe, even when it was destroying us.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.
Fear Drives Us Backward
Here’s what I’ve noticed over the years. When we find ourselves in a place of fear or uncertainty, that’s when we’re most susceptible to fall back into old behaviors.
Fear makes us reach for comfort. And if we’re not careful, we reach for the same comfort that nearly killed us.
It’s not always that we’re terrified of the transition itself. Sometimes it’s just the unknown. The waiting. The in-between season where you can see where you’re going but you can’t grab ahold of it yet.
That place is brutal.
What Moses Told the People
In Deuteronomy 31, Moses is addressing the Israelites right before they enter the Promised Land. And here’s the thing: Moses wasn’t going with them. The leader they had followed for years wasn’t going to be there for this next season.
Talk about a transition.
But Moses doesn’t panic. He reminds them of one thing: the Lord is going with you. Do not be afraid. Do not be dismayed.
The circumstances were changing. The leadership was changing. But God wasn’t changing.
And that’s the word for anyone in transition right now.
I’m in This Season Too
I’ll be honest with you. I’ve been walking through a major season of transition in the ministry. There’s a vision I’ve been carrying for almost two years now, and I’m still waiting on it to come to pass.
